Joey: When did you start tattooing and who gave you your first shot?
Jessica: I started tattooing the public exactly 7 years ago this month. I did have an apprenticeship but it wasn’t your typical one. A man by the name of Gary at Goldenlands in St. Louis was the one who apprenticed me. I am so lucky and glad that he did because many other shops in St. Louis said that “girls don’t tattoo but you can be a counter girl or a piercer”. I did both for a while when I was 18 and a little older but tattooing was the ultimate goal.
Joey: Tell us about the style of your work?
Jessica: My style….. hmmm…. I don’t have exactly just one. I do love doing color work though, especially if it has anything to do with nature. Anything in color and I’m game. The brighter and more girlie the better.  Also I really like to do traditional asian work. All the lines and color in that style is a lot of fun.  Line work is also a fav of mine. So anything like lettering I can do no problem. There is a style of drawing and tattooing that I did come up with about 3 1/2 years ago called “whims”. They are these little child like drawings that I do. They’re very whimsical and people either get the humor or they don’t wither way is fine but they’re main purpose is to make people smile. Also people usually get them on a whim, hence their name.
Joey: What artists do you admire?
Jessica: Oh man, there are so many good artists out  there now days that it seems at every convention you meet a new fav. I really like the more illustrative style of tattooing right now. The guys who do the portrait work are amazing but there’s just something about people who draw everything from scratch.  There’s a feel of flow and originality to it. My favorite artists out there right now are Kelly Gormley, Heather Mclean, Steve Moore, Evan Dowdell, Damian Robertson, Dave Knight & Kelly Doty. Not in that particular order or anything though but all of which I hope to get work from some day. Some I already have and some are in the plans:)
Joey: Is there someone you would love to tattoo?
Jessica: I would love to tattoo my dad. He has only 1 little tattoo he did on himself when he was 12 and that’s it. He says he just hasn’t thought of something yet that he would want on his body forever. Gotta respect that… but when he’s ready I’ll be waiting here for him.
Joey: What inspires you as an artist?
Jessica: Nature is what inspires me!! Nature is an amazing thing that is everywhere!! Anything from the trees to flowers to animals or the texture on a leaf, the human body or crystals and stones, they sky at night or the clouds rolling in. Nature is amazing! If you can’t see the beauty in nature than I don’t know if you could truly appreciate it, which we all should. It’s the reason why we are here in the first place.
